The United Kingdom and European Union are creating new regulations for AI transparency; drafting and implementing laws that will require bodies to communicate when they are using AI, and how they are using it. However, the exact meaning of ‘AI transparency’ is contestable, so implementing these rules requires interpretation. Our aim is to examine how data scientists are interpreting and implementing transparency rules in practice, and how they plan to in the future. We will create two legal and responsible innovation toolkits to help Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) comply with AI transparency requirements.

An interactive regulatory toolkit that provides UK and EU SMEs with practical and straightforward advice on developing, integrating and deploying transparent AI systems for the public.
This report is intended as a practical primer for SMEs aiming to improve their AI transparency but unsure how to do so effectively and efficiently. It clarifies essential concepts, highlights practical tools and resources, summarizes key legal and ethical guidelines, and offers concrete examples to implement transparency effectively. Throughout, we emphasize actionable insights and cost-effective strategies tailored specifically to SMEs and their resource constraints, offering insights into how they might better integrate transparency into their AI practices.
