Skills Projects

In September 2024, RAi UK funded six Skills Projects to address critical challenges related to Responsible AI skills, including issues related to upskilling, reskilling, pedagogy, or educational delivery across sectors or diverse populations.

Over 12 months, the project teams developed a wide range of training and educational resources including:

  • Co‑designing educational materials and professional learning sessions for secondary school teachers.
  • Developing cartoons articulating student voice and enacting student experience.
  • Collaborating with young researchers, educators, and third‑sector organisations to develop hands‑on learning activities.
  • Working directly with teachers to design, test, and refine accessible classroom activities exploring computer vision, machine learning, and generative art.
  • Designing an A‑to‑Z picture book for KS1 and KS2 children, introducing foundational AI concepts through engaging illustrations and age‑appropriate language.
  • Co-creating, designing and delivering eight free online courses to enhance knowledge of the use of GenAI in legal contexts.

Synergies across the projects highlight the need for contextualised AI education tailored to learners’ backgrounds and professions, avoiding one‑size‑fits‑all approaches. Strong pedagogical design—collaborative, interactive, embodied, and subject‑specific—underpins meaningful learning gains. Effective uptake depends on implementation and co‑design, as working collaboratively to co-produce resources with key partners clearly increases the trust that these actors have in the resources.
