Dr. Pepita Barnard

Pepita Barnard is a Human Factors Research Fellow at Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute in the School of Computer Science the University of Nottingham, UK. She uses interdisciplinary approaches to address novel problems. Pepita has both deep expertise and broad knowledge of health and social care domains and emerging technologies. As a result of her NHS background as a community mental health nurse, project facilitator and manager, and development and improvement manager, coupled with her doctoral training from Horizon CDT, and experience in multiple research areas such as human-robot interaction, protection from misinformation, health communication, equity and access for health technologies, and machine-learning tools to address bias in clinical decision support tools, Pepita is uniquely placed to address responsible interactions and interventions with AI applications for health, well-being, and social good.

Whether developing new collaborative networks, interdisciplinary research studies, or educational courses, recruiting, interviewing, or workshopping domain experts, analysing data, designing visualisations and toolkits, or disseminating findings and engaging widely, Pepita’s inclusive approach addresses Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), behavioural and technology acceptance theories, trust, trustworthiness, privacy-preservation, recovery from errors and failures.
