Summary

Conducting research and innovation using Responsible Innovation (RI) involves collaboration with stakeholders; anticipatory governance; the consideration of impacts on people and the environment; reflection; and response. The inclusion of RI principles is therefore central to ‘responsible’ artificial intelligence, but RI training and interdisciplinary practices need to be developed if they are to provide robust mechanisms for creating and assessing responsible AI.

RAKE sought to develop a better understanding of how to integrate RI within the entirety of the innovation pipeline. It consolidated existing experience and resources to work with CDTs, businesses, and an international standards organisation. It investigated how RI can be better embedded within innovation processes to improve development and deployment of AI that can legitimately be termed ‘responsible’. It collectively built on past work to support a new generation of RI-in-practice, strengthening RAI-UK’s responsible-AI research agenda. A small part of our project (WP4) also focused on laying the groundwork to develop a RAI-focused Humanities network using workshops and visits as a mechanism and using our prior work with Blast Theory (Cat Royale, and robotics) as the catalyst for further dissemination. This was accomplished through a series of workshops, papers, visits and ongoing collaborations.

RAKE sought to:

  • Map and assess current RI provision, tools, and practice within the UKRI ecosystem.
  • Identify training gaps in assessment and RI provision for responsible AI, and develop best-practice recommendations and documentation for training and delivery.
  • Connect with current providers of responsible practice standards and tools, and centres of RI training provision, to create a networked knowledge system around approaches to responsible AI.
  • Develop a programme of support for novel-technology companies moving into ‘open’ (unregulated) domains to reduce uncertainty and provide frameworks for governance.
  • Build a community of interdisciplinary researchers, who will be the catalyst for developing understandings, new methods and discourses around RAI.
  • Create longevity for project outputs, including card-based kits and other tools.

A collaboration between the University of Oxford, University of Warwick, University of Nottingham, Beyond Reach, Kainos, Swansea University, the National Archives, Platform 7, Pantar, Newton Europe, and Albino Mosquito.

Activities and Achievements

RAKE worked with software project delivery managers (DMs) at Kainos, a digital services company, to explore the use of Responsible Innovation Prompts and Practice cards (RI Cards). RI Cards are designed to highlight 16 different aspects of RI, each of which poses key questions and prompts for action for DMs to then consider (Portillo et al., 2023). You can read more in the RAKE contribution to our RRI and EDI blog series.

The slides from RAKE’s presentation at the IA and IP Projects Networking event are also available.

Impact

RAKE’s most significant work was undertaken with its industry partner: Kainos. Kainos has nearly 3000 employees and operates in 20 countries. The company develops digital transformation solutions, providing customers with software and tools to support their businesses and processes. As with many such providers, these solutions now frequently incorporate AI-driven tools, and Kainos – which already had a C-suite-led responsible-innovation mindset – was keen to understand how RI tools and processes could enrich its offering to clients and improve the services and products it offers. Accordingly, the project worked for four months with Kainos delivery managers (DMs) to develop greater mutual understanding of embedding RI into product and service development routines. This was achieved through an initial survey to assess the DMs’ understanding of responsible innovation, and a series of introductory workshops, followed by an eight week experimentation period where the DMs were able to try out the RI Prompt and Practice cards as part of their normal cadence, working with clients to incorporate them into the design and delivery process, and reporting back on a weekly basis. Finally, a follow-up survey was undertaken to garner views from the DMs on how they thought the process had gone, what the reception had been from teams and from clients, and whether their views on responsible innovation had undergone a change.

This process of mutual knowledge-sharing enabled RAKE researchers to gain insight into Agile and public sector development processes and delivery mechanisms. In turn, Kainos feedback was invaluable in shaping the next phase of the RAKE project engagement. The analysis that resulted from this process was taken forward into a series of Kainos-internal workshops, led by our contact in the company. Participants undertook a series of discussions and activities with the Prompt and Practice cards, developing a methodology for incorporating them into the Agile product development process. The outcomes from these sessions provided much rich data for analysis, and are presently being worked into a RAi White Paper: Frameworks and Toolkits for Assuring Responsible AI, August 2025, and a responsible-innovation-guided new way of working for Kainos teams.

Finally, the findings from the work with Kainos are being evaluated for wider applicability through a survey (ongoing) of companies that are providers of AI-based products and services and those using AI for their own operational needs.
